List My Five Experiment Two weeks later

We got a wonderful fall storm, that feels more like a late summer storm, in San Diego today and it has been special to be able to listen to thunder for most of the day.  Something you could never do in an corporate office.

Anyway, I have been on List My Five for 18 days now.  I have 41 articles (a little under the 3 in 30 day goal, but I should be able to make that up) and 3238 views with a grand total of $2.36.

That is about 3 times the amount of views I last reported, but sadly not 3 times the money, more like double the money.  Which means views do not mean earnings.  Just because they clicked on your article doesn't mean you will get any money from it.

That was the same at the old eHow.  That is why I was not such an advocate to have my friends come read my article and rate.  Rating never meant more money.

Now let me break down what has the most views and the most earnings.

The Stink Bug article is still the most views and the most money, at 204 views and 86 cents.  I wrote that article after I saw it posted on Google trends.  I didn't even know there was a stink bug epidemic in the east coast till a few days later.  In fact, it got worse over the following week, so I believe that is why my article is doing well.  But, I can't find it on a Google search, so I don't know how anyone else has been either.

The second most popular is the Top Halloween costumes one at 163 views and 16 cents.

I have high hopes for my Top Holiday Toys of 2010.  The idea came to me when I read about the toy conference and as I looked for research there was no definite list of the top toys…yet.  Maybe by the time it gets closer to Christmas the article will have "aged" and it will show up on Google search.

A good reason to read as much as you write, because inspiration will come to you that way.

I also have high hopes for my haunted house article, which has earned 4 cents since I posted it yesterday.  I couldn't find a definite list for the top haunted houses, so after doing extensive research, I came up with one.

My average views are around 80 and my average earnings are 13 cents a day.  Don't take these figures to heart as I am still writing every day and there won't be a real clear picture till I stop writing after 30 days, to see what happens.

Also, when I started eHow I was only making pennies a day and after about 1 1/2 years it was a $1.00 for each article a day and then it is two to three times that.  Point is most people bail because they are only seeing pennies and they think, "I did so much work and that's all I got."  That's all you got for this week, but I guarantee if you dedicate yourself to it, it will grow.  The first month it may only be $3.00, but the next month it's $6.00, next month, maybe $10.00 and after a year, your earning $100.00 a month and it keeps growing from there.  I saw the exact same thing  happen with eHow, so I know it can happen.

This month will be another record month at eHow and I have not written any new articles in 4 months, but I have still been social networking my articles.  I go back and as a season or holiday nears, I market those articles, and you should be doing that, too.

With LM5, I am finding that Twitter loves these articles and it is so cool to tweet it and then go back and watch the counter go up.  Nice to know that people are looking at my stuff.  I think they are popular because people wonder what is the top haunted houses or what is going to be the top toys this Christmas.

This should help give you a basis on how to come up with article ideas.  You come up with a question and then give the answer.  Then post the question on Twitter (marketing) and then your link.

I am off to write an article on a Discovery show called Disappeared they will be debuting October 4.  They sent me a preview of the show and I watched it and want to get the word out about this missing teen and the show on my other blog and at the examiner.

Talk to you guys soon.

The Top Five Signs You Are Addicted to Facebook

The Top Five Signs You Are Addicted to Facebook

List My Five Seven Days Later

It has been 7 days since I joined LM5 and I bet you all are wondering the outcome, so here it is:

Highest paying article:  Ways to Get Rid of Stink Bugs 62 cents

Most views:  Lies Dating Women Tell Men with 113 views

Total views:  1374

Total articles: 20 (one short of the 3 a day count)

Total Earnings:  $1.33

Remember after I saw the stink bug article earnings jump pass my other article earnings, I decided to write another pest control article?  Well, the second pest control article has only made a penny.  Both have the same ad on them and there is a 60 cent difference between the earnings.  I can only account for that as the stink bug article was on google trends and the other one was not.

One article I did no social networking on to see what effect that had on views and earning now stands at 15 views.  The average view on my other articles is 50 each.  Obviously, you have to advertise your articles.

I have done a google check on my article titles and nothing is coming up.  Very depressing.  I do know that conventionally, without a "Big Name" website to help, that it can take a month for your article title to appear.

Doing my own search, I typed in 5 ways to get rid of a moocher (my first article) and it does not come up on the first, second or even 3rd page.  I added the word "top", and finally I am on the first page about 6th one down.  Trouble is when people search they do not put in a whole title, they put in keywords, so the chances of my article being found is zilch.  But to be fair, it may take a month before we can see if LM5 articles will be found via google search.

That is only if google does not do the new algorithm as mentioned in my blog a couple of days ago.

Looking over my list of articles, the higher views are related to dating, the stink bug article and Halloween.

If you wondering what to write about this week, I would stick to autumn, upcoming holidays, dating advise and check google trends for ideas.

Is google going to force change for online writers?

I ran across this article this morning written by Nick Usborne, and he is saying that Google is changing their algorithm to ignore short articles (approx. 350 words or less).  For all of you that write for Demand Studios and in particularly LM5, this is going to have a big effect on earnings.

I have many old eHow articles that are near the top of Google search.  They have been there for a long time and have earned their way to the top, from hits and links.  In other words from popular choice they have inched their way to the front page of Google.

Now according to Usborne, they will no longer be found because Google will put them on page 20 of a Google search.  Fair?  I don't think so.  I think popularity should decide where these articles should go.

We are all now going to have to think of the future of our eHow articles.  Most are short, they were made that way, so people could read quickly how to do something and move on.  In fact, DS is a stickler about fluff words.  They want you to start every paragraph with an action verb and cut out any conversational style of writing.  This is one of the reason's I don't write there anymore.  I fluff too much. Take away my words and asking me to write technical style, was cramping my personality.  Anyway, what is going to happen to DS now.  Are all those millions of articles suddenly going to disappear to the back of the line?  What is that going to do to them?

Usborne goes on to say that DS is paying their writers peanuts and in order for the writers to make any money that have to write quick,  low quality articles.  Really?  I know personally, I don't feel any of my articles were low quality.  What keeps the quality up for myself, and I believe everyone else is that we are putting our name on it.  We have pride and know that people will be seeing it.  If it is low quality at all, it comes from writing inexperience, that remedies itself over time.

Usborne also says that more people will share a video on clipping a dogs nails that an article.  I totally disagree.  I took time to produce many videos on playing the piano, and they did not earn anywhere as much as my writing.  I personally don't like watching someone else tell me what to do, I would much rather read it.  I can skim, reread and get what I need out of an article, where with a video, you are stuck listening to every drone the speaker is saying.  Makes me feel like I am in school again.

So, what do you think?  Is the future of DS, LM5 or online writers earnings in general in jeopardy?

Should we all be making sure that each article has 350 plus words in it.    Google is going to force online writers to add extra fluffy words so that we have a chance of making it on the front page.  Frankly, it sounds to me that writing quality will go down instead of up as we all clamour to figure out a way to stretch out an articles word count.

List My Five Experiment

I have joined ListMyFive.com and since I have had experience with eHow over the years, I wanted to use that experience to see if LMF will be another alternate way to make money online.

I decided to try to write 3 LMF articles a day.  Why three?  About a month ago I read read an article where an author said that if you write 3 online articles a day on infobarrell.com, that after 5 years you would be bringing in a residual income of $10,000 a month.    Now think about that.  You work your tail off for 5 years and then from that point on, until the website no longer exists you have a constant income of $10,000 a month without doing another writing thing online.  Let's say the author is wrong and it comes out to be $7500 a month or even $5000.  That's a lot of money to keep earning a month for your prose.

If I had been more diligent with my eHow writing, AND if they had not gone DS on me, I believe I could have come close to that.  But with life, sometimes getting in the way, there were many days that I didn't write one, let alone 3.

So, I thought this would be a good chance for me to try it with LMF.  I chose LMF instead of infobarrel, just because of the ease of it.   Infobarrel requires at least a 400 word article and that can take a bit, and when you times it by 3, it can take a bit longer, and some days I know I wouldn't be able to do the challenge.  But, with LMF, I can pound out an article in under 30 minutes, once I did it in under 15 minutes, when I came up with an idea.  I think my previous experience with eHow helped.

The first day, September 14th, I only wrote 1, then 2 articles the next two days, and now I  writing 3 a day.  I will do my best to do this every day for a month, so we all can see how it comes out.

To back track a bit, here are my stats for the first couple of days.

I wrote 5 articles and had 300 views and earned 24 cents.

Tomorrow will be the first week, but let me show you what is going on now.

I have written 15 articles, 1011 views and $1.15 in earnings.  The average earnings are around .05, with the least amount of .01 and the most 61 cents.  The one that got 61 cents had an ad for pest control, so I will assume that ad brought me the extra money.  I quickly wrote another article on pest control, that gave me the same ad. Tomorrow I will find out if it will show higher earnings.

Also, I wanted to mention that the pest control ad did not have higher views.  My dating article had 106 views and has earned 04 cents, where the pest control articles has 57 views and 61 cents.  The ad on the dating article was about meeting woman, and I have no clue why the ad was not as popular and the pest control ad.  Although today my dating article has a great ad with Jane Seymore, so maybe it will do better.

Tomorrow will be the 7th day, but true earnings won't be till the evening of that day.

Also, my articles are all across the board with pest control, dating, Halloween costumes and jobs, so I am not sticking to one subject.

Some of my inspiration came from the eHow articles that generated the most money for me and others were based on google trends.  At this point, the are all about the same on views with the dating article alone getting about 25% more than the rest.

Plus, I have social networked all my articles.  The immediate counter on the articles on LMF, makes it easy to experiment the best place to advertise your articles.  I was happy to find that twitter and facebook worked the best.

You can easily do your own experiment also, by writing several articles and then twitting one and facebooking the other.  There are tons of social networking sites and the one that I like the best is stumbleupon.com.  It works wonders for my other articles, but it does NOTHING for LMF.  I don't know why, yet.  I guess people over there don't want to learn the top 5 of anything.

Anyway, I am off and will post soon with more info on this.  I would love to hear any experiments you are doing with LMF.
